The Gauge+ leverages Nielsen's The Gauge, a monthly report on U.S. TV viewership, to extract
data by
medium (cable, broadcast, streaming). EMG focuses specifically on streaming viewership and isolates
the top 10 most viewed streaming platforms each month. Applications within the top 10 that host
user-generated content, such as YouTube, are categorized in the “Other” bucket. This ensures the
focus remains on platforms that feature professionally produced, full-episode content.
From there, EMG uses first-party and third-party data, including sources such as eMarketer, to
assess and verify the ad-supported penetration of each top 10 streaming app. This data is applied to
adjust viewership shares, ultimately calculating the monthly distribution of U.S. ad-supported
streaming viewing by app.
The “Other” category encompasses all ad-supported video streaming platforms that are not individually stated. This may include apps that host user-generated content. Live streaming viewership is excluded.
